Hey, so guess what? On a random Wednesday (of all days), CD Projekt just dropped some news that might tickle your Cyberpunk senses. They’re officially kick-starting pre-production on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. Yep, it’s moving past its old codename, Project Orion, and now it’s just Cyberpunk 2. Simple, right?
They snuck this announcement into one of their financial presentations — those are usually a snooze-fest, but hey, got some exciting tidbits this time. The team working on this sequel got a nice pat on the back for reaching this pre-production stage. Oh, by the way, the first Cyberpunk game’s getting cozy with Nintendo Switch 2 soon. You might wanna keep an eye on that.
So, some weeks back, the crew at CD Projekt Red (you know, the folks behind the Cyberpunk universe) wrapped up conceptual work for the sequel. It’s official now — Cyberpunk 2 is in preproduction. No turning back. I mean, they could, but who does that?
Poking through the presentation slides, as of April 30th, we’ve got 96 developers pouring their souls into Cyberpunk 2 — that’s up from 84 in February. Sure, it’s nothing compared to the army of 422 working on The Witcher 4, but it’s something. Also, there’s this support gang of 131 doing the behind-the-scenes magic like localization and QA across CD Projekt’s universe.
And while we’re talking numbers — get this — the Phantom Liberty expansion has hit 10 million copies sold. Witcher 3? That grand old game is partying with 60 million copies sold as it turns 10. So many folks traveling to Dogtown or swatting monsters with Geralt.
Now, what’s in a name, right? Cyberpunk 2 could keep it that way or maybe, who knows, slap on a year like its predecessor. But hey, word from Mike Pondsmith (the grandmaster of TTRPGs) is that this game’s gonna dive into a city that’s like Chicago if it had a bad day… or life.
Anyway, lots to unpack and more to come, probably when I’m least expecting it. Can’t wait!
