So, I watched Borderlands 4 State of Play last night like, I guess, thousands of people. And wow, it was like a buffet of info. I got vibes more from Destiny 3 than the Borderlands 4 I imagined a while back. It’s weird, but maybe in a good way? I mean, the series taking a kind of risk like this? Bold, right?
First off, Borderlands is kind of famous for two things. One is the insanely fun FPS action. Think schlooters or whatever—a billion guns shooting wild, wacky stuff. Like, whoa! Even the first game—seemed a bit bland now, but back in the day? Major hook there.
And then there’s this humor thing. I’m not saying some folks don’t crack up at Claptrap or find twisted Spongebob hilarious. But honestly, that style? Not for everyone. Anyway, the Gearbox crew seems to be onto something fresh with Borderlands 4, like they’ve spotted this chance and just… ran with it.
About the humor – oh man, there were barely any jokes in the whole State of Play. Just a few quips, an enemy with a funky name, and that’s it. Expected way more cringe with ‘Sigma’ jokes, but nope, blissfully absent. It’s a whole new beast, I tell ya.
Visually too, it’s changed up. Still totally crazy but not overly cartoonish. Something about it feels… updated? Like exploring the world and finding vaults is morphing into more Bungee-ish vibes. Organic world events and bosses? Sure, adds a modern twist. Vaults like dungeons? Bold! Kind of like Destiny 2, with the quest drones and instant vehicles. Man, it’s a cocktail!
Elsewhere, it might seem like a weird shift. But right now, Bungie’s all over the place with Marathon, and Destiny 2’s updates are, well, smaller. And they’ve had weird layoffs too. But that’s another story. Anyway, there’s this gap now, and Borderlands could totally jump in.
Marathon’s getting mixed vibes from Alpha folks. Doesn’t hit hard enough, maybe? Before this, you could say Borderlands dropping in September was some strategic genius (even if Randy Pitchford was like, haha no). Now? Feels like they did everyone a favor. Marathon on the same day would’ve been blown away by Borderlands 4, probably.
Every little factor just buzzes in my brain. It feels like an exciting turn for Borderlands 4. Sure, maybe the hype dims later, but right now? It’s got people buzzing about Borderlands again. Solid move!
