So, Vuzix, this smart glasses company, just grabbed $5 million from Quanta Computer. Quanta’s this big deal from Taiwan, usually building stuff for Apple. Random thought—never imagined those virtual reality goggles could be a “thing” when they started, but here we are.
Anyway, Quanta tossed in $10 million before. I guess they’re buddies now? Right, back in September 2024, they bought Vuzix shares at $1.30 each. Dunno why I remember that. Something about numbers sticking weirdly in my brain. Vuzix was hoping for a total of $20 million from them. We’ll see, I suppose.
Paul Travers, who runs Vuzix—sounds like a cool job. He’s saying this cash will beef up their waveguide production. I had to Google waveguide once, and still not sure I get it. Basically, it’s supposed to help them make these affordable, lightweight smart glasses powered by AI. Just what everyone needs in their life… or not?
So Travers also thinks this is a big step for their relationship with Quanta. I imagine them high-fiving over this, which is hilarious. They’re juicing up their fancy waveguide facility, which sounds impressive. Wonder if it’s like Willy Wonka’s factory, minus the chocolate.
Vuzix has been around since 1997. They’ve mostly been in the biz world—healthcare, warehouses, you name it. But they also make waveguides for others. Ever heard of Garmin or Avegant? Yeah, me neither (well, okay, Garmin rings a bell), but they work with them. Apparently, some big U.S. tech company too, but they’re being all hush-hush about it. Mysterious.
A decade ago? They made some consumer stuff—the V920 and STAR 1200, whatever those are. Now, in 2024, they’ve dropped the Z100. Costs $500 and looks sleek. First AI-assisted pair, might be. You can match ’em with your smartphone for notifications, maps, fitness stuff. Fancy much?
By the way, smart glasses are kind of having their moment. Google’s getting in with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster (love that name), crafting fancy Android XR glasses. Meanwhile, Meta’s teaming up with Ray-Ban peeps for Oakley smart glasses, shooting for a June 2025 launch.
Oh, and don’t forget about Samsung and Apple—rumor mill says they’re cooking up their own glasses too. Samsung might release theirs this year. Apple? Maybe next year. And there goes the neighborhood—or the tech world, more like.
